Joshua Jackson was born in Vancouver in 1978, and by the time he turned fifteen, he already knew what it was like to shoot under the pressure of a major studio. He joined the cast of The Mighty Ducks in 1992 because they were looking for a boy with an everyday neighbor look who could skate on ice. The movie did so well at the box office that it spawned two immediate sequels and even a real NHL hockey team.
That early success could have typecast him forever in the family films of the nineties. But Jackson chose to pursue independent productions and stories with more edge.
In 1998, the casting call came that redefined his career and his bank account.
Kevin Williamson was looking for a funny supporting actor for a teen series set in a coastal town in North Carolina. Jackson auditioned for the role of Pacey Witter in Dawson's Creek and ended up stealing the spotlight from Dawson Leery himself over six seasons. His chemistry with actress Katie Holmes led the writers to change the direction of the main storyline in 2000.
And the gamble paid off.
When the show ended in 2003, many thought his career would fade away into forgotten TV movies. But Jackson moved to London to make his West End theater debut alongside Patrick Stewart. That decision to step away from Los Angeles for a while allowed him to shake off his image as a troubled teen in the eyes of casting directors.
J.J. Abrams signed him in 2008 to star in Fringe, a daring science fiction project that ran on air for five years. Playing Peter Bishop required a far more restrained and subdued register than he had shown until then. Filming for the series' hundred episodes took place almost entirely in Vancouver, bringing him back to his geographic roots for five years.
In 2014, he accepted the role of Cole Lockhart in the drama The Affair. Here the actor fully shed any trace of lightheartedness to play a man broken by the loss of a child. Critics praised his ability to hold silence on camera in highly charged psychological scenes that lasted several minutes without cuts.
He is an actor who isn't afraid of comparisons to his past.
Jackson has always preferred characters with a touch of darkness or moral ambiguity. In 2021, he took on the challenge of playing surgeon Christopher Duntsch in the miniseries Dr. Death. For this role, he had to transform his physique and study real recordings of a psychopath who operated in Texas hospitals.
In 2023, he starred in the television adaptation of Fatal Attraction, taking on the role that Michael Douglas made famous in film decades earlier. The series explored power dynamics and mental health in a far harsher way than the original 1980s version. Jackson shot most of his scenes in Los Angeles under a direction that aimed for gritty realism and constant tension.
By 2025, he is scheduled to return to the big screen in a new installment of the Karate Kid franchise alongside Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio. Filming for this production wrapped in Montreal after an estimated investment of 100 million dollars from Sony Pictures.
