Ang Lee gave her first break in 1997. Katie Holmes was eighteen when she stepped onto the set of The Ice Storm. She had no prior film experience, but her look matched what the director was looking for in the character of Libbets Casey.
In 1998, she accepted the role of Joey Potter in the series Dawson's Creek. The show, starring Kevin Williamson, ran for six seasons and cemented her image in late-'90s pop culture. She earned 175,000 dollars per episode in the later stages of the project.
And the gamble paid off.
During the show's run, she looked for projects that would move her away from the girl-next-door image. In 1999, she took part in Go and Miss Tingle's Tale. But mainstream movies were not yet her absolute priority.
Christopher Nolan chose her to play Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins in 2005. It was her most ambitious project at the box office. The film took in more than 370 million dollars in theaters around the world.
But her private life began to swallow her on-screen work that same summer. Her relationship with Tom Cruise sparked a media frenzy the industry failed to handle. In 2006, her daughter Suri was born, and the spotlight shifted from her performances to her red carpet appearances.
And she decided not to take part in the Batman sequel.
Maggie Gyllenhaal took her place in The Dark Knight while Holmes looked for smaller projects in New York City. She took part in Lucky Them in 2008 alongside Diane Keaton. That comedy barely managed to cover its production costs during its first month in theaters.
Because Holmes has always preferred gritty realism to the glitz of Los Angeles.
In 2016, she decided to step behind the camera for the first time. She directed and starred in All We Had, a drama about financial hardship based on Annie Weatherwax's novel. Critics praised her ability to direct the younger actors in the cast.
During 2022, she shot Alone Together at the height of the pandemic. She handled the screenplay and direction for a story about lockdown that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. In 2023, she released her third feature film as a director, titled Rare Objects.
Theater has also been a constant refuge for her. In 2023, she starred in The Wanderers at the Roundabout Theatre Company in Manhattan. The play received mixed reviews from the specialized press.
She has lived in New York since her divorce in 2012 and avoids the big California studios. Her production company, Noelle Productions, manages most of her independent projects. In 2024, entertainment stocks dropped 12%, which hit the distribution of low-budget films.
