Tobacco lobbyist Nick Naylor is fighting to SAVE HIS SKIN!

Nick Naylor is the spokesman for the major American tobacco companies and vice president of the Academy of Tobacco Studies, an organization that looks for links between cigarettes and every possible harm to their consumers. The Academy relies heavily on money from the companies themselves, and when Nick presents his findings, tobacco always comes out on top. His gift is talking and persuading, casting doubt on every study that links smoking to lung cancer. Standing against him are health advocacy groups and a senator who wants to take the fight into the political arena. Nick decides to go on the offensive and defend cigarette smoking in an increasingly hostile climate for smokers. Jason Reitman directs the film, and Aaron Eckhart plays the lead role.

Trivia about Thank You for Smoking

Reitman found funding for his script after meeting David O. Sacks, former COO of PayPal, who financed most of the film's 8.5 million dollar budget.
Mel Gibson saw himself as Nick Naylor in the adaptation. His production company, Icon, had bought the rights to the novel, but the project did not have a usable script.
Reitman decided not to show any smoking during the shoot. The only scenes with smoking are from old movies that the characters watch.
The film opened in just five theaters in the United States and earned 262,923 dollars in its first weekend, an average of 52,584 per theater.
