Synopsis of The League

Six friends from Chicago compete in a fantasy football league, where every roster decision matters. Their goal is to win The Shiva, the trophy awarded to the champion, named after a former high school classmate of several of them. To win, league members are willing to do almost anything, and their rivalries spill into each character's everyday life: work, relationships, family, and the pranks they play on one another. Amid face-offs and dirty tricks, the series mixes these personal storylines with appearances by NFL players. Created by Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcus Schaffer, it airs on FX and stars Mark Duplass.

Trivia about The League

The pilot episode, ordered on July 15, 2009, was written and directed by Jeff Schaffer, with Jackie Schaffer co-directing.
The renewal for a fifth season of 13 episodes, announced on December 20, 2012, moved the series to FXX, which was a new network at the time.
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson guest stars in the first episode of season two, titled "Vegas Draft."
NFL Network analyst and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Deion Sanders guest stars in episode 11 of season four, "12.12.12."
Actress Janina Gavankar plays Shivakamini Somakandarkram, the high school classmate the trophy is named after, and often appears in the season finales.
The Schaffers first offered the series to HBO, but they declined to wait a year for development and moved the project to FX, which ordered the pilot.
The show used episode outlines instead of scripted dialogue, so the actors improvised much of the conversation during filming.
Filming for the episode set in Las Vegas took place on location; Jason Mantzoukas had to be hospitalized after accidentally eating yogurt containing egg, which he was allergic to.
