Lizzy Caplan arrived on the set of Mean Girls in 2004 convinced that her career would be a string of supporting roles with plenty of black eyeliner. She was 22 years old, and the massive success of Mark Waters's film threatened to typecast her forever as the rebellious, cynical teenager.
But reality was far more boring and complicated. She spent almost five years jumping between one-off roles in forgettable series and projects that died after the first episode. The industry didn't know where to place her, because her look didn't fit the Californian blonde ideal of the era.
Her luck changed with Cloverfield in 2008. That J.J. Abrams production showed she could carry the weight of a big-budget film without losing her natural charm. And that is how genre cinema opened the doors that romantic comedy had denied her.
The industry didn't know what to do with her.
In 2009 she joined the cast of Party Down. This cult series about caterers in Los Angeles lasted only two seasons, but it showed casting directors her gift for dry humor. There she shared writing duties with Adam Scott and Ken Marino under a premise of constant failure that she handled with surgical precision.
The real turning point came in 2013 with the premiere of Masters of Sex. Playing Virginia Johnson was a physical and emotional challenge that moved her decisively away from the label of light comedy actress. The role demanded a mix of technical coolness and vulnerability that few actresses of her generation dared to explore at the time.
And the gamble paid off.
She earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2014. Over the four seasons the show ran on Showtime, Caplan not only acted but also came to understand the mechanics of high-level television production. Her per-episode salary rose sharply, and her name began appearing on lists of the most bankable actresses in the United States.
Film, though, was still unfinished business, which she addressed with cameos in movies such as Now You See Me 2 in 2016. That same year she shot Allied alongside Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, directed by Robert Zemeckis. The production had a budget of 85 million dollars, and she played the protagonist's sister in a wartime espionage plot.
As the 2020s arrived, her profile became much more selective. In 2022, she took part in the miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble for FX. Her performance as Libby, a suburban mother going through an identity crisis, was praised for avoiding the usual clichés of a midlife crisis.
So she decided to take a risk with a character who already belonged to the collective imagination. In 2023, she accepted the role of Alex Forrest in the television version of Fatal Attraction. It was a risky move, because comparisons with Glenn Close were inevitable, and critics were not always kind to the show's narrative approach.
That Paramount+ series was shot entirely in Los Angeles during the summer of 2022. The show's production design cost close to $10 million per episode, and Caplan signed a contract that included specific clauses on how her character's mental health would be portrayed.
The series was canceled after just one season of eight episodes.
