Pouring drinks for nearly ten years while collecting eight hundred rejections wears down anyone's morale. Mark Ruffalo held on because he had no backup plan. He spent much of the 1990s sleeping on a linoleum floor in Los Angeles, sharing an apartment with his brother Scott and going to auditions where no one seemed to remember his name once he left the room.

At the Stella Adler Academy of Acting, he learned to build characters from an uneasy calm. Nearly ten years of complete anonymity ended when playwright Kenneth Lonergan gave him the lead role in the stage play This Is Our Youth in 1996.

Lonergan trusted him again four years later for the independent drama You Can Count on Me. That 2000 film revealed a magnetic performer whose naturalness reminded American critics of the young Marlon Brando.

No one handed him a single foot of film.

The Tumor That Silenced Half His Face

In 2001, the industry finally came knocking. He had just finished filming The Last Castle alongside Robert Redford, and M. Night Shyamalan wanted him to star in Signs. But a bad feeling led him to request a brain MRI.

The medical diagnosis confirmed an acoustic neuroma the size of a walnut. The mass was benign, but surgery carried a serious risk of irreversible damage to the facial nerves. He decided to hide the illness from his wife, Sunrise Coigney, for weeks, since she was in the final days of her first pregnancy.

The surgery left immediate aftereffects. He lost all hearing in his left ear and suffered total paralysis on the left side of his face. For almost a year he shut himself away at home, trying to regain movement by chewing pieces of plastic and doing grueling exercises.

So Hollywood's train seemed to derail for good.

His body responded miraculously after months of isolation. In 2004, he returned to commercial filmmaking with the thriller Collateral by Michael Mann, and three years later David Fincher cast him as Inspector Dave Toschi in Zodiac. Fincher made him repeat dozens of takes while chewing saltine crackers to capture the real exhaustion of a cop burned out by bureaucracy.

In 2010, he tried his hand at directing with the drama Sympathy for Delicious. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, but its commercial run was a real financial disaster, barely earning forty thousand dollars at the box office.

The Green Armor and the Risk of Auteur Cinema

Marvel came late and with doubts.

In 2010, he agreed to replace Edward Norton in the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers, released in 2012. That decision gave him financial stability for the rest of his life, although from the start he insisted on the freedom to alternate the motion-capture suit with projects that challenged audiences.

He used that superhero money to fund his own vision. In 2010, he earned his first Oscar nomination for The Kids Are All Right, an honor he received again in 2014 for his haunting portrayal of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz in Foxcatcher.

In 2015, he joined Spotlight, playing journalist Michael Rezendes on the Boston Globe's investigative team. He earned three supporting actor nominations in five years, remaining one of the most sought-after supporting actors in American film while staying active in the fight against fracking and in environmental causes.

In 2020, he took on an enormous physical toll for the miniseries I Know This Much Is True. He first shot scenes as Dominick Birdsey, paused production for six weeks to gain thirty pounds, and returned to set transformed into his brother Thomas, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

In 2023, he broke away from his image as a compassionate guy in Poor Things, the satire by Yorgos Lanthimos. His performance as the vain, petty Duncan Wedderburn earned him his fourth Academy Award nomination.

In 2025, he premiered the science fiction film Mickey 17 directed by Bong Joon-ho. During production, the Korean director set a shooting schedule with days lasting more than twelve hours at Leavesden Studios in England, fine-tuning every line of dialogue on a final budget of one hundred and fifty million dollars.

Quotes by Mark Ruffalo

  • The true value of somebody in this town is very hard to determine. It's all smoke and mirrors.
  • I don't want to turn back the hands of time to when women shuttled across state lines in the thick of night to resolve an unwanted pregnancy, in a cheap hotel room.
  • I'm baffled by the way all three buildings came down. My first reaction was that buildings don't fall down like that.
  • We come together to mourn the lives lost to the same racist system that devalues Black lives and devalued the lives of Anthony and JoJo.
