To win the role of Thor in 2009, Thomas William Hiddleston hit the gym, ate industrial quantities of chicken and added nine kilos of lean muscle in six weeks. He showed up to the audition with his hair dyed blond, convinced that his six-foot-two frame would be enough to wield the hammer from the Marvel comics.
Kenneth Branagh watched the audition tapes. He instantly knew that this refined man, educated at Eton and graduated with honors in Classics from the University of Cambridge, was good for something else.
They didn't give him the hammer.
He was offered Loki, the resentful and scheming brother. That last-minute detour kept the London-born actor from being typecast as a muscle-bound hero and opened the door to a decade of transatlantic shoots.
Before landing on Hollywood sets, his natural habitat was low-budget British independent cinema. He had made his big-screen debut with Joanna Hogg in Unrelated in 2007, a drama shot in Tuscany, Italy, in which he played an aloof, privileged young man. He worked with Hogg again in 2010 on Archipelago. These were films built on uncomfortable silences and minimal budgets, the antithesis of what was to come.
In 2011, he released four feature films almost back to back. Steven Spielberg recruited him for War Horse, Woody Allen transformed him into F. Scott Fitzgerald for Midnight in Paris, and Terence Davies gave him a self-destructive romance in The Deep Blue Sea.
But it was the box office of The Avengers in 2012 that blew past every industry forecast, approaching 1,518 million dollars in theaters worldwide. Hiddleston headed the villain's lineup alongside a half-dozen superstars.
Any other actor of his generation would have settled into the franchises of Los Angeles. He chose instead to alternate the green makeup of the Norse god with risky productions that offered no guarantee of commercial returns. In 2013, he starred alongside Tilda Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive, directed by Jim Jarmusch, playing a reclusive, depressed vampire locked in a mansion in Detroit.
Two years later, he worked under Guillermo del Toro in Crimson Peak and with Ben Wheatley in the unsettling High-Rise, based on J.G. Ballard's dystopian novel. Not every move paid off.
And the box office sealed its fate with country music.
In 2015, he set out to bring to life the Southern music legend Hank Williams in the biographical drama I Saw the Light. He learned to sing, played guitar live and lost a dramatic amount of weight to embody the decline of the Alabama musician. But the film was a major financial disaster: it grossed just 1.8 million dollars against a budget of 13 million, and American critics tore its portrayal apart.
Between film shoots, his natural refuge from box office setbacks was the London theater. He would return to the West End to test the pulse of pure text. In 2013, he starred in Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse under the direction of Josie Rourke, a production in which he ended up hanging upside down by his ankles while icy water poured over his torso.
Physical discipline on stage is an constant obsession for him. In 2019, he made his Broadway debut in Betrayal by Harold Pinter, a stark three-person production that earned him a direct nomination for the Tony Awards.
British television changed the rules of the game.
In 2016, the BBC premiered The Night Manager, an adaptation of John le Carré's espionage novel directed by Susanne Bier. Hiddleston not only took on the lead role of Jonathan Pine but also joined the series as an executive producer. The miniseries won him a Golden Globe and put his name at the top of the lists of candidates to play James Bond in the British press.
So in 2021, he repeated the production setup with Marvel Studios by signing on as executive producer of Loki. He designed the series as two closed seasons that formally concluded in November 2023, with his character tied to the multiversal throne of the fiction.
For his next film projects, he sought out collaborations with genre directors. In 2024, he premiered the fantasy drama The Life of Chuck at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Mike Flanagan from a story by Stephen King, the film won the audience award at the Canadian festival without the initial backing of a major distributor.
In 2025, he closed the contracts for the back-to-back shoot of seasons two and three of The Night Manager, produced jointly by the BBC and Amazon Studios. The budget for this double production exceeded 65 million British pounds to film on location in Colombia and the United Kingdom.

Things you probably didn't know about Tom Hiddleston
The loneliness of Hester and Freddie certainly struck a chord with me. I’ve been the independent one in a relationship, but I’ve also been the one who wanted just a circle of two.
I said to Chris, 'Dude, just hit me. Just hit me because I'm protected here and it's fine.' He's like, 'Are you sure?' I was like, 'Yeah, it will look great. Just go for it.
