Synopsis of Prehistoric Planet

A natural history team brings to life, with computer-generated imagery, the dinosaurs and other animals that inhabited Earth 66 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous, shortly before the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. The stars are these creatures, spread across the planet, and the narrative thread is the voice of David Attenborough, who presents them in the style of a nature documentary. The series aims to show how these species might have behaved, based on recent paleontological research. It airs on Apple TV+, and Mike Gunton is credited as creator.

Trivia about Prehistoric Planet

Some species are covered in feathers, such as juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex, following recent paleontological research to depict the animals of the Cretaceous.
Paleozoologist Darren Naish and scientific illustrator Gabriel Ugueto served as consultants on the depiction of prehistoric life, alongside other experts.
Following the premiere, it was revealed that the series had eleven consultants in addition to Darren Naish, including Steve Brusatte and Mark Witton.
The computer-generated imagery was designed to be photorealistic, just like the earlier productions from the same team: The Jungle Book and The Lion King.
It is the first major BBC documentary series about dinosaurs since Planet Dinosaur, from 2011.
Apple TV+ announced "Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age," a new five-episode installment narrated by Tom Hiddleston and premiering on November 26, 2025, set millions of years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
The second season premiered as a five-day event, with a new episode each day from May 22 to May 26, 2023, and kept David Attenborough's narration and music by Hans Zimmer.
"Prehistoric Planet" received recognition from the Television Critics Association, the Visual Effects Society, the Annie Awards, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and the Cinema Eye Honors Awards.
