Synopsis of Planet Earth II

Planet Earth II is a nature documentary series that the BBC presents as the follow-up to Planet Earth. David Attenborough presents and narrates it. The show takes viewers around the world from the perspective of the animals themselves, who are the stars of the journey. Cameras travel through jungles, deserts, mountains, islands, plains and cities to observe the most representative inhabitants of each habitat. The drama lies in how these species survive in very different environments, each with its own strategies. The series premiered on BBC One on November 6, 2016.

Trivia about Planet Earth II

The BBC announced the series in 2013 under the working title One Planet, which later changed to Planet Earth II.

It is the first television series the BBC produced in ultra high definition (4K), and it used filming technologies developed since the first installment.

The BBC trailer used the same music as the one for Planet Earth, «Hoppípolla» by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós.

The series won two Television Awards and two Television Craft Awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, as well as two Primetime Emmys.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of the 28 reviews collected are positive, with an average rating of 9.7/10.

Planet Earth II reached the No. 1 spot on IMDb's Top 250 TV series chart, and in 2024 it ranked second.

Each of the six episodes included a ten-minute making-of documentary titled Planet Earth II Diaries.

The first episode drew 12.26 million viewers in the UK and set the record for the highest audience for a nature documentary under the measurement system in use at the time.
