Synopsis of Planet Earth

Planet Earth is a nature documentary series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and narrated by David Attenborough. It airs on BBC Earth and travels across the entire planet to showcase the diversity of life that inhabits it. Its eleven episodes each offer a global look at a different biome or habitat on Earth. At the end of each chapter, a roughly ten-minute featurette shows how the scenes were filmed and what challenges had to be overcome. The first episode, titled "From Pole to Pole," opens the series with a journey from one end of the globe to the other.

Trivia about Planet Earth

The idea came after the success of The Blue Planet, and Lorraine Heggessey, then controller of BBC One, commissioned the series in January 2002.
The series won several awards, including four Emmys, a Peabody and a Royal Television Society award.
The first five episodes averaged 11.4 million viewers in the UK, including early-afternoon repeats, and even outperformed The Blue Planet.
In the United States, the first three consecutive episodes averaged 5.72 million viewers, and the network earned its third-best audience in its history.
The BBC trailers used "Hoppípolla," from the album Takk... by Icelandic post-rock group Sigur Rós, and after the ads the single was re-released.
George Fenton's score won him the award for Soundtrack Composer of the Year at the 2007 Classical BRIT Awards.
By June 2007, the series had already aired in 130 countries, according to its premiere listing on BBC One.
During filming, the crew rescued a penguin chick trapped in a hole in the ice, an exception to their usual rule of not interfering with animal behavior.
