Chris Hemsworth dies within the first ten minutes of Star Trek in 2009. It was a brief appearance, but enough for casting directors in Los Angeles to take note of his name. Before that galactic sacrifice, he was only a familiar face in Australian living rooms thanks to the soap opera Home and Away.
Hollywood rarely gives second chances to actors from foreign television.
In 2011, he accepted the role of Thor for a salary of 150,000 dollars. It was a laughable figure for a Marvel superproduction, but the actor needed a foothold in the American industry. He had to put on ten kilos of muscle in a few months to fit into a costume that would define his public image for the next decade.
And the gamble paid off.
His relationship with Disney spanned eight movies in which the character evolved from Shakespearean solemnity to physical comedy. But the commercial success that came with the prop hammer hid an anxiety about getting trapped in the stereotype of the tough guy with no nuance.
In 2013 he sought critical respect with Rush. Directed by Ron Howard, he played racing driver James Hunt and showed that his physical presence could convey fragility. It was a technical, no-nonsense shoot in which the actor had to lose much of the muscle mass he had built for Marvel in order to fit into the cockpit of a real 1 Formula One car.
But the big change came with parody. In 2016, he took part in the reboot of Ghostbusters, playing an incompetent secretary. He improvised most of his lines and discovered that audiences connected better with his ridiculous side than with his image as an unshakable hero.
That instinct led him to transform the god of thunder franchise starting in 2017. He worked hand in hand with directors who let him tear down the lead's perfect image. That is how he turned a demigod into a vulnerable celebrity prone to failure.
The body has a biological limit.
During the filming of the documentary series Limitless in 2022, the actor underwent extensive genetic testing. The results showed that he has two copies of the APOE4 gene. That finding means a significantly higher genetic predisposition to developing Alzheimer's in the future. The news did not take him off screen, but it did change his work pace and his choice of projects.
In 2024 he broke away from his conventional hero image in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. He played Dementus, a deranged warlord in a post-apocalyptic desert. He wore a prosthetic nose and used a shrill voice to move away from any trace of classic good looks. The film grossed 173 million dollars at the global box office against a budget of 168 million.
The box office doesn't always forgive risk.
That same year he voiced Optimus Prime in the animated film Transformers One. It is a purely technical job that lets him shoot from Australia without massive equipment transfers. His production company, Wild State, has content development deals that prioritize shooting on Australian soil to avoid uprooting his family in Byron Bay.
His production deal with National Geographic for several science outreach projects remains in effect until 2027. Chris Hemsworth currently earns an average of 20 million dollars for each major studio production in which he stars. His estimated net worth exceeds 130 million dollars according to the tax records of his companies in New South Wales.
