Liam Hemsworth landed in Los Angeles in 2009 with just enough money to survive a few weeks on the floor of his brother Chris's apartment. The two shared an agent and ambitions, but fate nearly played a cruel trick on them when both reached the final stage of the casting for Thor. In the end the role went to the eldest Hemsworth, and Liam had to find his own path outside the universe of capes and lightning.

That failed audition defined his early career.

In 2010 he landed the lead role in The Last Song, a Nicholas Sparks adaptation that put him on the international press's radar. But his real breakthrough into the global industry came in 2012 when he agreed to play Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games. That franchise earned more than 2,900 million dollars at the box office across its four film installments.

And success brought an unexpected personal price.

During the years of filming the dystopian saga, his private life became mass-market entertainment because of his on-off relationship with Miley Cyrus. He tried to step away from the media noise by taking refuge in more low-key projects such as The Dressmaker in 2015 alongside Kate Winslet. But the press preferred to talk about his breakups rather than his ability to hold the frame opposite top-tier actresses.

A Refuge in Genre Cinema

Critics were not always kind to his choices after the Panem adventures ended. In 2016 he starred in Independence Day: Resurgence, a sequel that failed to connect with audiences the way the original 1990s film did. So Liam decided to pull back and look for stories where his physique wasn't the only selling point.

In 2019 he starred in Killerman, a gritty action thriller in which he played a money launderer with amnesia. It was a bet on independent cinema that aimed to break away from his image as a teen heartthrob. But the actor has always preferred to keep a low profile in Australia, far from the glitz of California, where he often surfs to unwind from the demands of major studios.

Because the Hemsworth surname carries as much weight as it helps.

The most difficult handoff of his career

In October 2022, the industry received news nobody expected in specialized forums. Netflix announced that Liam Hemsworth would take on the role of Geralt of Rivia starting with the fourth season of The Witcher. Replacing Henry Cavill was a huge logistical and physical challenge, which the Australian actor accepted with almost military discipline.

He trained for months to build muscle and master sword handling before stepping onto the film set.

Filming for this new chapter began in 2024 under the fierce scrutiny of fans of Andrzej Sapkowski's work. But the production team counted on his physical presence to keep one of the streaming platform's most expensive intellectual properties afloat. In 2024 he also premiered in Land of Bad, a war action film in which he shared the screen with Russell Crowe.

His contract for the fifth season of the fantasy series was already signed before the first episode of his debut as a witcher aired. The estimated budget per episode exceeds 10 million euros.
