Destiny Hope Cyrus didn't ask permission to legally change her name to Miley in 2008. By then she was Disney Channel's most profitable asset and carried the weight of a franchise generating astronomical profits. In 2006, the premiere of Hannah Montana placed her in a position of absolute privilege but also of zero creative control.

The series ran like a Swiss watch in terms of ratings and sales. But her contract required her to maintain a public image that clashed with her real artistic interests. During the five years of the original production, she had to juggle 16-hour shoots with world tours in which she played a fictional character.

In 2010, she tried to break away from teen movies with The Last Song. It was a strategic move to move toward adult drama, and that is where she met Liam Hemsworth. The film performed well at the box office, grossing $89 million on a modest budget.

The industry never forgives independence.

The controlled demolition of the myth

The year 2013 marked the total break with her immediate past. Her performance at the MTV VMAs sparked a wave of fierce criticism that aimed to punish her change in image. But behind the media noise there was a clear intention to take back control of her personal narrative.

She released the album Bangerz and moved away from the major studios to explore riskier projects. She worked with Woody Allen on the series Crisis in Six Scenes in 2016, where she played a radical young woman in the 1960s. It was a role that went largely unnoticed by the general public but showed her ability to carry complex dialogue and theatrical rhythms.

And then came the silence.

In late 2018, a wildfire in California destroyed her home and much of her unreleased recording material. This event changed the way she understood music production and led her to seek rawer sounds. In 2019, she appeared in an episode of the series Black Mirror, playing Ashley O. The script was a scathing critique of the exploitation of pop stars, and she drew on her own Disney experience to give authenticity to the role.

Refuge in Rock and Vocal Maturity

The vocal cord surgery she underwent in 2019 to treat Reinke's edema transformed her most important tool. Her voice gained a raspy, deep texture that fit perfectly with the sound of Plastic Hearts in 2020. On this album she collaborated with figures like Billy Idol and Joan Jett to break away once and for all from the most commercial radio formulas.

And the gamble paid off.

Because she no longer sought the approval of TV executives or the parents who bought her records in 2007. Massive success returned in 2023 with the release of Flowers, which broke records for chart longevity on global sales charts. The song became the single that reached one billion streams on Spotify the fastest.

Her career is defined by resisting a machine that tried to retire her when she turned twenty. At the 2024 Grammy Awards, she won Record of the Year for Flowers, after nearly two decades of uninterrupted professional career.
