Selena Gomez began asking for permission at seven years old. She was no cereal commercial kid, but a supporting actress on the set of Barney & Friends, learning to look at the camera before learning to ride a bike. By 2002, she already knew what a strict shooting schedule meant.
Her time in Texas was brief because the Disney machine recruited her early. In 2007, she took the lead role in Wizards of Waverly Place, and it was far more than a teen series. It was an exclusive contract that forced her to measure every word in front of millions of viewers.
And the gamble paid off.
But the child-star mold often breaks loudly. Gomez decided to do it from control of her own credits. In 2017, she served as executive producer of 13 Reasons Why for Netflix. She didn't want to act in it; instead, she financed stories that others considered too raw for her usual audience.
That decision changed her standing in the industry. She stopped being a face for posters and started sitting at the tables where checks are signed and casting decisions are made. In 2020, she founded her own cosmetics brand, Rare Beauty, which within a few years reached a valuation of $2000 million.
In 2021, she landed the project that took her out of the tabloid circuit and brought her back to serious critical attention. Only Murders in the Building paired her with two veterans, Steve Martin and Martin Short. Many doubted the chemistry of that trio (two comedy legends and a former Disney star), but the mix turned out to be organic.
Her performance as Mabel Mora is dry and restrained. Gomez uses sarcasm as a shield while her castmates handle the over-the-top theatrics. In 2022, she received her first Emmy nomination as a producer for this Hulu series.
Arthouse cinema finally arrived in 2024.
Jacques Audiard chose her for Emilia Pérez, a musical about a Mexican drug trafficker who undergoes a gender transition. It was an absolute risk that required her to shoot in Spanish and take on a dramatic register she had never explored in Hollywood. In May 2024, the Cannes Film Festival jury awarded the Best Actress prize, shared with her castmates.
That award in France put an end to doubts about her acting ability. She no longer needed to prove she could act, but could choose what kind of films she wanted to produce from then on. Still, success did not erase her chronic health issues (lupus and a kidney transplant in 2017), which shape her work schedule.
Gomez manages her career with a coolness she didn't have as a teen. In 2023, she became the woman with the most followers on Instagram, a figure that tops 420 million users, but her public appearances are increasingly selective. She prefers the control of the office to the chaos of the red carpet.
In 2024, the actress's production company confirmed that filming for the fourth season of her flagship series took place on location in New York and Los Angeles. The per-episode budget of the show topped 15 million dollars.
