Synopsis of Wizards of Waverly Place

Alex, Justin and Max Russo are three teenage siblings who train as wizards in an apartment on Waverly Place in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. Created by Todd J. Greenwald and airing on Disney Channel, the series follows a family whose children learn to use their powers responsibly. Their father, Jerry, a former wizard, gives them daily lessons in his secret hideout. Their parents run a sandwich shop on the building's ground floor disguised as a subway station. The three know that one day they will compete for sole custody of the family powers, so they must master them and keep them hidden while dealing with the social and personal problems of adolescence. Selena Gomez plays Alex, the middle sister and the central figure of the cast.

Trivia about Wizards of Waverly Place

Disney executives discovered Selena Gomez at an open casting call in Texas when she was twelve, and she later guest-starred on the network's shows.

The pilot that never aired took place in a magic shop and originally had only two siblings: twins Jordan and Julia.

A Disney Channel programming executive cited the sitcoms Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie as influences on the series.

Murrieta said the team wanted Alex to be openly bisexual, but they couldn't make it explicit at that point.

The hour-long series finale was the show's most-watched episode, with 9.8 million viewers, and the highest-rated finale of any Disney Channel series.

In March 2025, Disney renewed "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place," a sequel to the original series, for a second season, with production set to begin in April in Los Angeles.

The TV movie "Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie" won the Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program in 2010.
