Lucy Hale didn't land in Los Angeles with a movie contract in hand. In 2003, she was part of American Juniors (a spin-off of American Idol), where she finished among the top five winners. That musical chapter didn't define her career, but it gave her an early understanding of how the entertainment industry worked.
Before turning twenty, she already had brief appearances in shows like Drake & Josh and Wizards of Waverly Place. They were supporting roles that barely paid the bills. But in 2010, her life took a turn when she accepted the role of Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars.
Television doesn't forgive the mistakes of youth.
That teen drama stayed on the air for seven seasons until 2017. During that time, Hale became a constant presence on teenagers' binders across half the world. But TV fame often comes with a dangerous typecasting, which she tried to break through genre films.
In 2011, she had a brief appearance in Scream 4 under the direction of Wes Craven. That was only a preview of what was to come. In 2018, she starred in Truth or Dare (a Blumhouse production), which grossed $95 million on a budget of just $3.5 million. The numbers spoke for themselves, and the horror market welcomed her as a safe bet.
Sometimes the industry only sees a pretty face.
But Hale wanted more control over her projects. In 2021, she starred in the romantic comedy The Hating Game, where she also served as an executive producer. This decision was no accident. She wanted to stop being just a cog in the machine and start making calls on scripts and casting.
In 2020, she headlined the cast of Fantasy Island (another foray into suspense), and shortly after led the series Ragdoll in 2021. This British production allowed her to explore a much darker and more adult tone, far from the high school dramas that made her famous years earlier.
Hale has spoken openly about her struggles with mental health and her battle with an eating disorder during her years on television. In 2023, she shared in several interviews her journey to sobriety after years of a complicated relationship with alcohol. This honesty has redefined her public profile beyond the screen.
And the audience responded with respect.
In 2023, she shot the film Which Brings Me to You alongside Nat Wolff. It's a romantic drama that steers away from the genre's usual artifice to focus on raw conversations about the past. In 2024, she took part in the shoot of The Gemini Lounge (a thriller about the New York mafia), where she plays a young woman caught in a web of FBI informants.
The Gemini Lounge had an estimated budget of $10 million and was shot mainly on location in New Jersey during the month of May.
