Austin Butler was born in Anaheim in 1991 and spent almost fifteen years as the interchangeable face of teen series. His stints on Hannah Montana or Zoey 101 didn't suggest he was a method actor. They were paycheck roles in which his main asset was a perfect fringe and a harmless smile.

The industry had typecast him as the casting-sheet heartthrob. But he used the downtime on set to read Chekhov. In 2013, he starred in The Carrie Diaries, and the result was the same as always (another piece of fast-food entertainment that didn't demand much intellectual effort).

To shoot Elvis in 2022, the actor isolated himself from the world for two years. He stopped seeing his family and covered his house with images and timelines of the singer's life. He studied every twitch and every inflection of his voice until his own identity dissolved into the character.

The physical toll caught up with him. The day after wrapping filming, his body collapsed, and he had to be hospitalized for a virus that mimicked appendicitis. He had pushed his stamina to the limit for a film that grossed 288 million dollars at the worldwide box office.

And the gamble paid off.

He won the Golden Globe and earned Oscar nominations with the aura of old Hollywood actors. But the toll was a curious one, because his voice changed permanently. In his 2023 interviews, he still carried that deep Southern accent that many mistook for an affected pose.

He prefers physical shoots and getting dirty. In The Bikeriders, filmed between 2022 and 2023, he insisted on riding vintage motorcycles without stunt doubles in several risky sequences. He shares the screen with Tom Hardy and proves he can keep pace with the heavyweights of today's cinema.

His strategy is to choose directors with a very personal vision. He isn't after the comfort of endless superhero franchises. During 2024, his involvement in Darren Aronofsky's new project, titled Caught Stealing, was confirmed.
