Michael Irby is not a name you'll find in gossip tabloids. He's a face viewers recognize right away because he has been working in the shadows of the industry for more than two decades. He was born in 1972 in Palm Springs, and his mixed heritage meant he had to navigate labels from the very start. But he preferred the craft, so he moved to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
There he learned that acting is not about poses but about endurance. His early years were a desert of small parts and auditions in which his physique never quite fit the molds of the era. He worked in theater and waited for his chance while logging countless hours in procedural series that almost no one remembers today.
Hollywood doesn't hand out anything for free.
In 2006, he landed a role in the cast of The Unit. That series about special forces gave him the stability he was looking for and allowed him to play Charles Grey across sixty-eight episodes. It was the moment he stopped being a passing supporting player and became a trusted actor for casting directors in Los Angeles.
Her career's real breakthrough took time to arrive, but when it did, it hit with unusual force. In 2018, he took on the role of Bishop Losa in Mayans M.C., the FX spin-off of the biker franchise. Irby brought a physical restraint that avoided the genre's usual excesses, and he stayed with the show until its finale in 2023.
But prestige television had other plans for him.
While he was wearing the leather of the Mayans, he was also filming Barry for HBO. Playing Cristobal Sifuentes allowed him to break free of the tough-guy stereotype he had been stuck with for years. His character's relationship with the mobster NoHo Hank became the emotional heart of a series that, on paper, was a dark comedy about a hitman.
He managed to make a cartel leader come across as vulnerable and tender without losing an ounce of authority. That blend of registers is what finally convinced specialized critics that Irby could carry any kind of storyline, no matter how complex.
Sometimes talent isn't enough if you don't have the grit it takes.
In recent years he has diversified his presence in large-scale projects. In 2020 he lent his voice and likeness to the video game Cyberpunk 2077, playing Shadow and proving that new storytelling formats are no stranger to him. In 2024 he appeared in the series The Night Agent and joined the shoot for the second season of The Last of Us for HBO in 2025.
He doesn't seek absolute leading status because he knows his strength lies in the solidity of the ensemble cast. His name appears in the credits of more than eighty productions across film and television since he debuted in the late 1990s. His participation in the Netflix production in 2025 was signed under strict confidentiality clauses in Vancouver.
