Benito Martinez was born in Albuquerque in 1971 and never rushed to become a star. His father was a musician and actor, so the stage bug was in the house from the start. Before stepping onto a Los Angeles set, he decided he needed a solid foundation and moved to London to study at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
He returned to the United States with a refined technique that had little in common with the ambitions of his contemporaries. In the 1990s, he began picking up small roles in series such as Zorro and The X-Files. The appearances were brief, but they paid the bills while he learned how the industry really worked.
It all changed with a casting call in Los Angeles.
In 2002, he got the chance to play Captain David Aceveda in The Shield. The character was a complex man who navigated between political ambition and police duty in a fictional Los Angeles neighborhood. Martinez held his own against Michael Chiklis for seven seasons and 89 episodes of raw television.
That FX series broke the rules of classic police drama. The actor brought a much-needed restraint to the chaos of the Strike Team. But the most notable thing was how he handled fame after the series ended in 2008. Rather than chase the lead in a light comedy (the usual path at the time), he chose to follow the road of the character actor.
Television is his natural habitat.
He kept landing prestigious projects. In 2011, he joined the cast of Sons of Anarchy to play Luis Torres. It was a supporting role, but one with real weight in the plot involving the Galindo cartel. His imposing presence and deep voice helped him avoid the stereotypes Hollywood often assigns to Latino actors.
Between 2015 and 2017, he took part in the anthology American Crime, created by John Ridley. In this production, he played a range of roles, showing that his London training was still intact. He played characters with heavy emotional weight (desperate fathers and men trapped by the system), which earned him unanimous respect from specialized critics.
In 2017, he joined the world of 13 Reasons Why as Sheriff Diaz. It was a long-running job that lasted until 2020. But Martinez never neglected film, and in 2017 he also appeared in the movie American Made alongside Tom Cruise, directed by Doug Liman.
His work pace didn't slow down in the following decade.
In 2021, he took on the role of Jorge Diaz Sr. in the Prime Video series With Love. It was a shift toward family dramedy that worked well with American audiences. At the same time, he kept his presence in procedural drama with recurring appearances in 9-1-1: Lone Star, playing Gabriel Reyes between 2020 and 2023.
Unlike other actors who constantly seek validation on social media, Martinez keeps a low profile off set. His name appears in the credits of major cable television productions because he guarantees technical reliability and zero conflicts on set. In 2024, he signed new syndication agreements for his previous work that will keep his presence on the air for years to come. The contract for his most recent television production closed with a standard confidentiality clause regarding the fees received.
