Synopsis of Firefly

Created by Joss Whedon and aired on FOX, Firefly is set in the year 2517, when humanity has already settled in a new star system with habitable planets and moons. It follows the crew of the Serenity, a ship that roams space on the fringes of the law. Its captain, Malcolm Reynolds, fought on the losing side of a civil war and now wants only one thing: to stay free. To do so, the crew takes on dubious jobs and avoids the Alliance, the central government that aims to subdue all worlds. Nine people with very different motivations live on board. Keeping the ship running requires constant income, and any misstep can attract their enemies. Nathan Fillion leads the cast.

Trivia about Firefly

Through mid-December, the series averaged 4.7 million viewers per episode and ranked 98 in Nielsen ratings.

TV Guide placed it fifth on its list of the 2013 series canceled too soon, with 60 entries.

Whedon came up with the concept after reading The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, a novel about the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.

Fox rejected the original pilot and demanded a new script by Monday morning, so Whedon and Tim Minear locked themselves away over the weekend to write it.

Production designer Carey Meyer built the Serenity ship in two parts, one for each level, as a full set with ceilings and practical lighting.

NASA used "The Ballad of Serenity" as the wake-up song for the crew of STS-130 on February 12, 2010.

On March 15, 2026, Nathan Fillion confirmed that an animated series is in development, with animation by ShadowMachine.

The new animated series of «Firefly» is in advanced development, with the script finished, ShadowMachine handling animation and several members of the original cast expected to voice their characters. However, it does not yet have a confirmed platform or release date.
