Synopsis of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

In the 24th century, Earth is part of the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet commander Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks, arrives on Bajor to take charge of Deep Space Nine, a former Cardassian base that the Bajorans have reclaimed after a long occupation. The Federation runs the station alongside them, with a mixed crew of Starfleet officers and Bajorans. Soon after his arrival, Sisko and Jadzia Dax discover a stable wormhole that connects to the Gamma Quadrant, and the station is moved to its entrance. The Bajorans regard the beings who live there as the Prophets and Sisko as their Emissary, a religious role that makes him uncomfortable. The series thus explores the clash between his duty as commander and the expectations of a people who see him as a spiritual guide.

Trivia about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

The station's physical model sold for $132,000 at a Christie's auction in New York in October 2006.

Alexander Siddig, who played Dr. Bashir, was happy to star in a standout series even though viewers couldn't easily tell his racial background.

Morn, a regular at Quark's bar, never speaks a single word on camera, even though the other characters often comment on how chatty and funny he is.

The soundtrack for the pilot episode was released on CD on June 30, 1993, between the first and second seasons.

The series was nominated for two Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, for the episodes "The Visitor" and "Trials and Tribble-ations."

In the battles between Federation and Klingon fleets, the effects department used Playmates toys, Ertl model kits, and Hallmark Christmas ornaments as background.

Terry Farrell was the last actor hired for the main cast, and during filming Michael Westmore redesigned Jadzia Dax's makeup, removing her forehead ridges and adding the Trill spots.

The documentary What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, directed by Ira Steven Behr and David Zappone, featured new interviews with nearly the entire cast and several members of the production crew.
