Siddig El Fadil was born in Sudan, but global audiences knew him by a shortened name and a space doctor's lab coat. His uncle is Malcolm McDowell. That family connection helped him make his first contacts in London, although his real training took place on the stages of the rawest British theater.
In 1993, he signed the contract that would change his bank account. He accepted the role of Dr. Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. At first, the character came across as pedantic and somewhat flat, because the writers did not understand the potential of an actor with his look in an American production.
And then the turning point came.
They discovered that his genetic heritage could drive the plot. The plot twist about his altered origins saved the character from being completely irrelevant. During the show's shoot, he married his castmate Nana Visitor in 1997. They had a son and divorced in 2001, without the legal process affecting the atmosphere on set.
Siddig decided to change his stage name to Alexander Siddig in the mid-nineties. It was a pragmatic decision. He wanted to avoid casting directors typecasting him as a terrorist or a generic Arab prince.
Many fans expected his arrival on Game of Thrones in 2015 to be a key pillar of the story. He played Doran Martell. But the writers decided to remove his character much sooner than planned in the original books.
Years later, Siddig admitted that the way his exit was handled was cold. He was told by phone and was not given much explanation about the change in the story's direction. So he focused on finding projects where he would have greater control over the tone of his performance.
But the work never stopped coming.
Ridley Scott called him for Kingdom of Heaven in 2005. There, he brought Nasir to life with a physical restraint that surprised European critics. That same year, he appeared in Syriana alongside George Clooney. He earned a modest fee compared with the main stars, but his role as Prince Nasir Al-Subaai earned him the respect that television sometimes denied him.
In 2017, he took on the mask of Ra's al Ghul in the series Gotham. It was a mature, cynical version of Batman's villain that worked well with a young audience who didn't know him from his earlier work. During that shoot, he showed that his theater training allowed him to elevate dialogue that might have sounded ridiculous in other hands.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Foundation for Apple TV+. He played Commissioner Abbas in a production with a budget of five million dollars per episode. The scale of the project was massive, but he preferred to focus on the intimate dialogue scenes.
During 2022, he worked on the series Shantaram. Outdoor shoots were complicated by logistics and extreme weather. Siddig kept his policy of never complaining about working conditions as long as there was hot coffee on set.
And the gamble paid off.
He signed on for the series The Last Frontier in 2024. The project was shot as a survival drama in the Alaskan forests, where he plays a man with a dark past. Production company Deep Space Productions closed that fiscal year with a positive balance of 1.2 million euros after managing image rights at international conventions.
