Hiam Abbass left Nazareth in the late 1980s with a camera and the determination not to look back. She wasn't chasing glory in Paris but a independence that her social circle denied her simply because she was a woman. In 1985, she made her film debut in Le soulier de satin under the direction of Manoel de Oliveira. It was a brief role, but enough for the French industry to notice a magnetism that didn't need grand gestures.
Abbass decided not to return to Nazareth.
Throughout the 1990s, she took on work in European productions that demanded absolute restraint. In 1998, she shot Vivre au paradis and began refining the understated acting style that became her trademark. But it was in 2004 that her name started to resonate at international festivals thanks to The Syrian Bride. In the film, she played a woman trapped in the absurd bureaucracy of the Golan Heights and made audiences empathize with a political cause through an intimate drama.
The film industry often typecasts Arab-origin actresses as long-suffering mothers or victims of armed conflict. Abbass sidestepped that trap by choosing scripts where silence carried more weight than screaming. In 2005 Steven Spielberg cast her in Munich, where she played Marie Claude Hamshari. Her presence in a blockbuster of that scale proved her ability to sustain tension alongside established stars.
And the American market opened its doors to her.
In 2008, she starred in The Visitor by Tom McCarthy. That performance earned her a Gotham Award nomination and proved she could lead an independent project in New York without losing her Mediterranean essence. But not everything in her career went smoothly. In 2012, she directed Inheritance, her first narrative feature, which received lukewarm reviews for its fragmented structure.
In 2018, she joined the cast of Succession to play Marcia Roy. The HBO casting team was looking for someone who could hold Logan Roy's gaze without showing weakness. Marcia was the series' great mystery, and Abbass kept that ambiguity throughout the show's four seasons. She reportedly earned about $100,000 per episode in the final stages of production, according to various industry sources.
She balanced filming the series with her role in Ramy starting in 2019. In this Hulu comedy, she explored a much lighter and more human side, far from the political drama that had defined her early career. Abbass prefers working on projects that challenge Western perceptions of Arab identity without falling into propaganda. In 2022, she took part in the new version of Hellraiser, bringing Serena Menard to life in a turn toward pure genre cinema.
Absolute control of the scene.
In 2023, she starred in the documentary Bye Bye Tiberias, directed by her daughter Lina Soualem. The film explores the exile of four generations of women in her family and uses personal archive footage shot in the 1990s. Post-production on this documentary was carried out entirely in studios in Paris and Lyon over eight months in 2022.
