Iain Glen was born in Edinburgh in 1961 and never rushed to become a star. He left his studies at the University of Aberdeen to join RADA in London. In 1985, he received the Bancroft Gold Medal upon graduating from the academy.
Technique always came before ego.
Many associate him with big-budget television, but his foundation is purely in theater. In 1998 he starred in The Blue Room alongside Nicole Kidman, and the production became a media sensation in London and New York. Critics of the time spoke of an electric chemistry between the two on stage.
Glen has never been afraid of physical or emotional exposure on stage. He won the Silver Bear in Berlin for his role in Silent Scream in 1990. That European prize opened the doors of the American industry to him, as well as period productions such as Mountains of the Moon.
But the theater remained his usual refuge.
Thanks to his classical training, he could move from Shakespeare to contemporary drama with ease. In 2006 he appeared in The Crucible in London's West End and received an Olivier Award nomination. His reputation in British theater was already secured long before digital cameras arrived.
His breakthrough with international audiences came with Game of Thrones in 2011. He played Jorah Mormont across all eight seasons of the series, up to its finale in 2019. He appeared in a total of 52 episodes of the HBO drama, and his character was one of the few who survived almost to the end of the story.
That contract gave him the stability to balance big-budget productions with independent films. Between 2004 and 2016 he brought Dr. Isaacs to life in the Resident Evil franchise. He worked under Paul W.S. Anderson on several installments shot in locations in Canada, Mexico and South Africa.
Not all of his projects were critical successes.
In 2019 he took on the challenge of playing Bruce Wayne in the series Titans. It was a mature, weary version of the character that sparked debate among comic book fans over its narrative approach. But Glen defended the script with the same seriousness as if it were a text by Chekhov.
In 2023 he appeared in the series The Rig for Amazon Prime Video, playing Magnus MacMillan. The production was filmed entirely in Scotland, at studios located in the port of Leith. It was a return to his geographic roots after decades of shoots in deserts and international sets.
That same year he premiered Silo on Apple TV+, playing Dr. Pete Nichols. The series was renewed for a second season, which set its production for 2024 at studios in Hertfordshire. Glen has been based in the Dulwich neighborhood of London for years.
