Eli Cohen wants to join the Mossad, but he has been turned down twice. The years leading up to the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and Syria serve as the backdrop for the series. When he is finally recruited, his mission is to infiltrate the Syrian government and win the trust of its leaders. Sacha Baron Cohen plays the lead in this miniseries created by Gideon Raff, which Netflix streams. The series is inspired by the real life of a spy, whose daily routine consists of pretending to be someone else without raising suspicion.

Trivia about The Spy

The series is based on the book L'espion qui venait d'Israël, written by co-authors Uri Dan and Yeshayahu Ben Porat.

Sacha Baron Cohen was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.

Sacha Baron Cohen's performance has been very well received. Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone writes that he couldn't have found a role better suited to his talents and career to date.

Sacha Baron Cohen spent three months in Morocco during the shoot, staying at a hotel across from a Wahhabi mosque that didn't serve alcohol. The cast included Algerian, Palestinian, Christian, Arab and Kuwaiti-Palestinian actors.

Filming took place mainly in Morocco, with additional work in Hungary and the United Kingdom; Syria could not be used as a location because of the Syrian civil war.

Gideon Raff explained that Sacha Baron Cohen adopted an Israeli accent to play Eli Cohen and that his preparation during the months of filming in Morocco was especially intense.

The series received criticism for some historical inaccuracies, including the lack of independent verification of certain contacts Eli Cohen had with members of the Syrian elite during his undercover work.
