Synopsis of The Cosby Show

The Huxtables are an upper-middle-class African American family who live in a brownstone in Brooklyn, New York, at 10 Stigwood Avenue. Cliff, the father, is an obstetrician and the son of a well-known jazz trombonist. Clair, the mother, is a lawyer who brings the same dedication to her career that she brings to her home. Together they raise five children: Sondra, Denise, Theo, Vanessa and Rudy. The daily life of this large family, with its routines, arguments and efforts to understand one another, is the heart of the series. It is produced by Bill Cosby, Ed Weinberger and Michael J. Leeson, and Leeson also stars in it. It airs on NBC.

Trivia about The Cosby Show

Cosby insisted that the show be taped in New York rather than Los Angeles, where most television series of the era were filmed.
Cosby's original idea was for the parents to have working-class jobs, with the father a limousine driver and the mother an electrician. His wife, Camille Cosby, got him to change the concept.
During the third season, Phylicia Rashad was pregnant with her daughter Condola. Rather than writing it into the storyline, the producers cut back her scenes significantly or filmed them in a way that kept the pregnancy from showing.
The opening theme uses seven versions of "Kiss Me," all based on a 1974 Cosby song that appears on the album At Last Bill Cosby Really Sings.
The Cosby Show spent five consecutive seasons as the most-watched show on television, and it is one of only two sitcoms in Nielsen history to achieve this.
The final episode was taped on March 6, 1992 and aired during the Los Angeles riots of 1992, while Cosby called for peace in the media.
The series generated $2,500 million in television revenue, of which $1,000 million came from advertising and $1,500 million from syndication.
The spin-off A Different World was initially built around Denise Huxtable, but Meg Ryan was first cast to play Maggie before Marisa Tomei took over the role. The series premiered in 1987 and ran for six seasons.
