The firing that changed everything

In 1995, he was fired over the phone from Saturday Night Live. It was neither an agreed exit nor a graceful one. Adam Sandler received the news with the same bewilderment as his fans, but decided he wouldn't apologize for his sense of humor.

That same year, he shot Billy Madison on a budget of five million dollars. The movie grossed five times that amount and laid the foundation for his business model. The plan was simple: make cheap comedies, shoot them with his longtime friends, and never listen to the specialized critics in New York.

And the gamble paid off.

He founded his own production company in 1999 under the name Happy Madison Productions. The name comes from combining his first two major commercial hits. From that office in Los Angeles, he began keeping a close eye on every dollar of his budgets and deciding who got into his inner circle of trust.

Before shooting each scene, he usually improvises lines that aren't in the original script. His regular directors know the script is just a suggestion. But behind that facade of chaos and easy jokes lies absolute control over the intellectual property of his characters.

The risk of dry drama

Paul Thomas Anderson cast him to star in Punch-Drunk Love in 2002. Film critics expected a total disaster. Audiences discovered that the guy yelling on screen could channel a real, suffocating anxiety that nobody had known he had until then.

It wasn't an isolated accident in his career. He repeated the move in 2017 with The Meyerowitz Stories under the direction of Noah Baumbach. On that shoot, he agreed to take less than his usual fee so he could work alongside actors of the caliber of Dustin Hoffman.

But his real moment of authority came in 2019 with Uncut Gems. The Safdie brothers pushed him to his physical limit on a shoot where the actor suffered several real bruises. The film earned 50 million dollars at the box office with an anxious, decidedly non-commercial premise.

Many expected that after that recognition, he would devote himself only to art-house cinema.

But Sandler preferred to return to vacation comedies with his group of friends. It's a formula his critics hate and his investors love. He knows his loyal audience isn't looking for narrative experiments, but for a familiar face and a comfortable setting.

The algorithm empire

In 2014, he signed a massive deal with Netflix to produce four original movies. The deal was reportedly worth about 250 million dollars. He was the first major Hollywood name to understand that the remote control was more profitable than the traditional Friday night box office.

He renewed that contract in 2020 for a similar amount. His movies have accumulated billions of hours of viewing on the platform. It's a symbiotic relationship where he provides the face and the platform provides the viewing data from millions of households.

In 2023, he released the animated film Leo and the comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. For the latter, he worked with his wife and daughters. It's his way of managing work in the industry. He turns every film set into a family reunion paid for by a major studio.

Nobody tells him what to do.

In 2024, he starred in Spaceman under the direction of Johan Renck. The production cost 40 million dollars and was shot almost entirely at a studio in Prague. The actor spent most of his time hanging from wires to simulate zero gravity aboard a spacecraft.
