The craftsman of profitable laughs

Peter Segal didn't come to Hollywood to reinvent the language of cinema or to win Palme d'Or awards. His entry into the industry was pragmatic and straightforward. In 1994, he was given the job of directing Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, and he delivered what the studio asked for. That film grossed more than 50 million dollars in the United States alone and earned him a reputation as a reliable director for big-budget comedies.

Before jumping into movies, he had honed his instincts in television. He worked on comedy shows and series such as The Jackie Thomas Show, where he learned to handle the egos of established comedians. But it was his collaboration with Chris Farley on Tommy Boy in 1995 that defined his style. The film became a cult favorite for the video store generation and proved that Segal knew how to balance physical comedy with moments of minimal tenderness.

It was her trial by fire.

Segal has never disowned his role as a high-end hired director. In 1996, he directed My Fellow Americans with Jack Lemmon and James Garner. It was a project of technical maturity where the dialogue carried more weight than the pies to the face. But the market was calling him back to physical comedy and rowdy humor.

The Golden Partnership with Adam Sandler

Segal's career changed scale when he crossed paths with the production company Happy Madison. In 2003, he released Anger Management and brought Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler together on screen. The result was a massive hit that earned 195 million dollars worldwide. Segal understood that his job was to put the camera at the service of his stars' charisma without getting in the way too much.

A year later, he reunited with Sandler for 50 First Dates. This film is probably his most remembered work, thanks to the chemistry between its leads and a script that ran like clockwork. Shooting in Hawaii with a generous budget allowed him to refine his visual style, something he tended to neglect early on.

Romantic comedy was never as profitable for him again.

In 2005, he closed out his personal trilogy with Sandler by directing The Longest Yard. It was a remake of a 1970s classic, and Segal opted for aggressive direction and fast editing. The movie worked because it didn't try to be subtle. Because Segal knows that in commercial cinema, subtlety is sometimes the enemy of profitability.

From family films to the world of streaming

His move into action movies came in 2008 with the adaptation of Get Smart. It was a complex shoot with international locations and a cast led by Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway. Segal managed a budget of 80 million dollars and delivered a film that grossed more than 230 million. It was the peak of his influence at the major studios in Los Angeles.

After a period of lower activity, he returned in 2013 with Grudge Match. He pulled off the feat of pitting Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro against each other in a boxing ring. But audiences responded coolly, and critics didn't forgive the script's lack of freshness. From that point on, his projects became more spread out over time.

And then the market changed for good.

In 2018, he directed Jennifer Lopez in Second Act, aiming to recapture the spirit of his 1990s comedies. The film held its own at the box office, but Segal's interest shifted toward digital platforms. In 2020, he released My Spy with Dave Bautista. Due to the global situation that year, the film ended up being watched mostly on subscription services.

In 2024, he repeated the formula with the sequel My Spy: The Eternal City, partly shot on location in Italy. The production was designed from the start for home viewing under the Amazon MGM Studios label. The shoot in Rome had a local crew of more than 200 professionals.
