Paul Thomas Anderson was born in 1970 into a family where showbiz was part of everyday life. His father did voice-overs for horror movies on television, and that atmosphere infected young Paul from an early age. He wasted no time on academic theories, preferring to spend his college tuition money on shooting his first short film. By the time he was twenty, he already knew that filmmaking is learned by burning negative, not by listening to lectures in an air-conditioned classroom.
His entry into the industry was no walk in the park. In 1996 he released Hard Eight after a fierce fight with producers over the film's final cut. It was a clear statement of intent. The director made it clear that no one would touch his shots without his permission. And so one of the most solid careers in contemporary American cinema was born.
And the risk paid off.
In 1997, Boogie Nights arrived, and the world discovered a storyteller capable of choreographing impossible long takes. The film explored the porn industry of the 1970s with a mix of euphoria and sadness that few expected from someone so young. But Anderson didn't want to be the new hotshot of music videos. He wanted to capture the soul of California.
His ambition grew with Magnolia in 1999, where he brought together Tom Cruise and a rain of frogs in a choral story about forgiveness. It was a grueling shoot that lasted months and ended with a theatrical running time of three hours. Critics began comparing him to the great names of the New Hollywood of the 1970s. Warner Bros gave him total freedom, and he used it to make a work that many consider his early emotional testament.
But the real change came in 2007 with There Will Be Blood. Here, the visual style became dry and mineral. The camera no longer flew around as much as before. It stayed still, watching the ambition of an oil prospector played by Daniel Day-Lewis. The film cost 25 million dollars and earned almost triple that. It was the moment when Anderson gave up fireworks to focus on the texture of the earth and the sound of fire.
In 2012, he released The Master. It is a cryptic film about the human need to have a leader to follow. The relationship between Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix became an acting duel that bordered on the physical. The director chose to shoot in 70 millimeter to capture every pore of his actors' skin. The giant format was used to portray the smallest intimacy, not just wide-open landscapes.
Sometimes film is just a matter of light and shadow.
After the LSD-fueled experiment of Inherent Vice in 2014, the director returned to British elegance. In 2017, he shot Phantom Thread in London. It was the last film of Daniel Day-Lewis before his announced retirement. It is a film about control and the everyday poisons of the haute couture world of the 1950s. Anderson worked as an uncredited cinematographer because he wanted to control every ray of light that came through the mansion's windows.
In 2021, he returned to his roots in the San Fernando Valley with Licorice Pizza. It was a bright project that he shot with friends and family. He cast Cooper Hoffman, the son of his longtime collaborator Philip Seymour Hoffman, in the lead role. The film avoided big dramas to focus on the energy of two young people running through the streets of Los Angeles in 1973. The budget was 40 million dollars, and it was a vibrant breath of fresh air in his filmography.
The director has never stopped working with his circle of trust. Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead has composed almost all of his soundtracks since 2007. That stability lets him take risks in each new production without fear of commercial failure. Anderson knows his audience is loyal and that international festivals anticipate his films as premier events.
In 2024, filming began on his most ambitious project to date, with an estimated budget of $115 million. The movie features Leonardo DiCaprio in the cast and is set for release on August 8, 2025. Filming took place mainly on location in California under the working title The Battle of Baktan Cross. The production used large-format Panavision cameras to ensure optimal picture quality for IMAX theaters.
