Things fall. People watch. And when it rains, it pours.

In the San Fernando Valley, in Los Angeles, the film opens with several stories that seem unrelated. One follows Jim Kurring, a plainspoken, highly dedicated police officer who gets a call about a disturbance in an apartment building. Neighbors have called because loud music is blasting from one unit after an argument. Jim goes there to check what is happening, and his encounter with the woman who lives in the apartment marks the start of his shift. Paul Thomas Anderson writes and directs this ensemble drama, whose cast includes Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, and John C. Reilly.

Trivia about Magnolia

Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the role of Earl Partridge with Jason Robards in mind, but a staph infection initially prevented him from accepting it.
The film's most celebrated long take lasts 2 minutes and 15 seconds, following Stanley Spector as he arrives at the studio where a game show is being taped.
For the prologue set in 1911, Anderson shot with a hand-cranked Pathé camera, the type used at the time.
"You Do" was written specifically for the film, based on a character who was cut from the final edit.

  • I'll tell you everything, and you tell me everything, and maybe we can get through all the piss and shit and lies that kill other people.
  • One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do Two can be as bad as one It's the loneliest number since the number one No is the saddest experience you'll ever know Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know.
  • The sex you're trading up for What you hope is love Is just another thing that He'll be careless of. But though there are caveats galore, You've only got to love him more — And you do; You really do. Even when it's all too clear.
  • You're sure There's a cure. And you have finally found it. You think One drink Will shrink you 'til you're underground And living down. But it's not going to stop. It's not going to stop. It's not going to stop 'Til you wise up.
