Orlando Jones didn't start in front of the camera. In the late eighties the young man from Mobile preferred scripts to spotlights. In 1987 he sat down to write for the sitcom A Different World and soon after ended up producing The Sinbad Show for Fox.
He never sought the spotlight.
But the pace of comedy in Los Angeles pushed him onto the stage. In 1995 he became one of the founding faces of MADtv. There he learned that his gift for parody was almost mechanical and that his body worked like a precision tool for physical comedy.
A soda commercial changed his bank account. The 7UP campaign with the slogan Make 7UP Yours made him a recognizable face in living rooms across the United States by the end of the decade. It was an advertising fluke that opened the doors to top-tier mainstream film.
And the gamble paid off.
Jones wasn't a catalog model but a comic with an aggressive sense of timing. Thanks to that drive, he landed in Office Space in 1999 and soon after in Magnolia. Paul Thomas Anderson cast him in a brief role (Worm) because he needed someone who could hold the tension against the veterans of the cast without blinking.
In 2001 Evolution arrived. DreamWorks put 80 million dollars on the table to try to repeat the ghostbusters formula with aliens. Jones shared the screen with Julianne Moore and David Duchovny in a blockbuster that wasn't the disaster many remember, but didn't catapult him to full-on stardom either.
He took on nearly everything that came next. He shot The Time Machine in 2002 and moved into action films with Biker Boyz a year later. But Hollywood didn't know where to place him. He was too funny for pure drama and too intense for the conventional romantic comedies of the day.
Television gave him a second life, much darker. In 2013 he played Captain Frank Irving in Sleepy Hollow. But his real cultural impact came with the role of Mr. Nancy in American Gods. Jones not only acted but also wrote much of his character's dialogue to give him a raw, real political edge.
In 2019 he was let go from the series.
The actor publicly denounced that the new head of production considered his character's message to be harmful to audiences. It was a noisy exit that ended up in the court of public opinion and marked his move away from major fantasy franchises. In 2020 he took part in the miniseries The Good Lord Bird, and in 2023 he joined the cast of Swagger.
The second season of Swagger had an estimated budget of $35 million.
