Karan Soni arrived in Los Angeles in 2007 with a solid plan but no real connections. He was eighteen and had a spot at the University of Southern California to study business. But acting crossed his path almost by accident.

In his early training years, he realized that his look didn't fit the stereotypes of the time. He was often offered flat roles based solely on his ethnic background. In that Hollywood of the late 2000s, the options for an Indian actor were scarce.

His professional debut came in 2010 with a small role in Kaka Nirvana. It marked the start of a period of constant auditions, where rejection was the daily norm.

The luck of low budgets

His real breakthrough had nothing to do with the major studios. In 2012, he took part in Safety Not Guaranteed, an independent film that cost less than one million dollars. The movie gave him the chance to work with Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass under the direction of Colin Trevorrow.

There he played Arnau.

The shoot lasted only a few weeks, but it got comedy casting directors to start noting his name. Soon after, he landed guest spots in series like The Neighbors and Betas, where he began sharpening his timing for fast-paced dialogue.

The Cab Driver Who Wouldn't Go Home

In 2016, his life changed completely thanks to a taxi. He entered the Deadpool universe playing Dopinder, a character who had little weight in the original script. But the chemistry with Ryan Reynolds was so obvious that the role grew during production.

Earned the union minimum salary for the first installment while hoping the movie wouldn't be a box office disaster.

And the gamble paid off.

He reprised the role in Deadpool 2 in 2018 and returned for the third installment in 2024. Soni achieved something very rare in superhero movies: his character has no powers or capes, just an aggressive shyness that connects with audiences directly.

The voice behind the mask

Soni didn't want to get stuck in traditional sitcoms. Between 2019 and 2023, he starred in the anthology series Miracle Workers alongside Daniel Radcliffe. Each season he switched gears, going from a clerical angel to a warrior in an apocalyptic future.

In 2023, he voiced Pavitr Prabhakar in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The role was a personal milestone, bringing to life the Indian version of Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grossed more than 690 million dollars worldwide.

The voice recording process stretched over months due to the complexity of the animation and constant changes to the script by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Soni had to record many of his lines remotely to fit the post-production schedule.

In 2024, he joined the cast of Abbott Elementary to play a new romantic interest. Filming for his episodes took place at the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank under a strict television production schedule.
