Synopsis of The Dropout

Elizabeth Holmes leaves Stanford with an ambitious idea: to found a health company capable of revolutionizing blood testing. Amanda Seyfried plays Holmes in this drama miniseries created by Elizabeth Meriwether and streaming on Hulu. Based on the ABC News podcast The Dropout, the plot follows the rise of Theranos, the company Holmes builds in Silicon Valley with the backing of investors and collaborators. Starting from her preteen years, the series reconstructs the experiences that may have pushed its lead toward ambition and deception. The conflict develops from the gap between the promise Holmes sells to the world and what happens behind closed doors at her company, a contrast that increasingly strains those around her.

«She had the world at the tip of her finger.»

Trivia about The Dropout

Kate McKinnon was initially cast to star in the series, but on February 18, 2021, she left the project without explanation. Amanda Seyfried replaced her on March 29 of that year.

Samba TV reported that 499,000 American households watched the series during its first four days of streaming.

The series received six nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, and Seyfried won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series.

Michael Showalter joined the project as executive producer on March 31, 2021 and directed the first four episodes. The series was the first production from Searchlight Television.

During filming, Elizabeth Meriwether rewrote dialogue with less than 24 hours' notice after a spreadsheet turned into new lines for the actors.

The series won the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Limited or Anthology Series Television Production in 2023.

The cast and crew shot the adaptation for more than two months before September 2021, as Meriwether explained during the awards campaign.
