Synopsis of The Act

The series is split into two timelines, the past and the present, and follows Gypsy Blanchard, played by Joey King, a young woman confined to a wheelchair by an illness. Her mother, Dee Dee, played by Patricia Arquette, has dedicated her life to caring for her. As Gypsy grows older, she begins to demand more independence, and the relationship between the two sours as the mother becomes more protective, controlling and abusive. The conflict escalates when Gypsy tries to explore her sexuality. The series was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean for Hulu, and the main cast also includes AnnaSophia Robb, Chloë Sevigny and Calum Worthy.

Trivia about The Act

To play Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, Joey King shaved her head, a physical change the actress had to embrace.

Aleah Woodmansee, the real-life inspiration for the character Lacey, objected to AnnaSophia Robb speaking with a cheerful accent in the series.

Several scenes were filmed at the Savannah Mall shopping center, and those for the eighth episode were shot at the Bryan County Courthouse.

On April 4, 2019, Gypsy Blanchard announced she would take legal action against the series and against Michelle Dean, whom she named as its creator.

Gypsy's stepmother, Kristy Blanchard, accused Dean of breaking her promise to share the series' earnings with Gypsy.

Patricia Arquette won the 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for playing Dee Dee Blanchard, while Joey King was nominated for Lead Actress.

The Act was conceived as an anthology series, and Hulu had not yet announced a second season as of July 2019; any future continuation would have told another true crime story.
