Synopsis of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

The series is set in Beverly Hills in 1989 and follows brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, played by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch. Prosecutors argue that both wanted to inherit the family fortune. They tell a different story: that they lived in fear of their parents because of the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse they say they suffered. Javier Bardem plays Jose, an ambitious and controlling entertainment businessman, and Chloë Sevigny plays Kitty, his wife. Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix, the production reconstructs the events from different and contradictory perspectives, leaving viewers to decide which version they believe. The central conflict revolves around the gap between what was said in court and what the brothers say they lived through in their home.

Creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan explained that the project was inspired by the popularity of the case on TikTok and Instagram, where true crime content creators sparked a movement supporting the brothers.

The episode "The Hurt Man" was shot in two days with a total of eight takes, and the last one was the one that aired in the final version.

During filming, Koch and Chavez visited the former Menendez residence on Elm Drive in Beverly Hills, and they were allowed to go inside the house.

The United States Tennis Association had changed the color of its courts from green to blue, so the team had to find a private court that kept the original green surface.

The season stayed in Netflix's global top 10 for seven weeks, matching the record set by Monsters: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, the series earned 11 nominations and won the award for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series.

Ari Graynor landed the role of Leslie Abramson after an audition held the day before the actors' strike, and she received the offer on the same day the strike ended.

The series debuted with 12.3 million views in its first four days and reached the No. 1 spot on Nielsen's streaming content chart, with 1,720 million minutes viewed.
