AnnaSophia Robb competed in gymnastics for four years before realizing her body could be used to tell stories in front of a camera. In 2004, she starred in a TV special based on the American Girl dolls, and that helped casting directors in Los Angeles put her photo at the top of the pile. She was not the typical kid who constantly sought adult approval.
In 2005, she played Violet Beauregarde in Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The director wanted a competitive look and a jaw that never stopped moving. Robb spent months compulsively chewing gum so the gesture would look natural during filming in London. That movie grossed $©475 million and immediately pulled her out of international obscurity.
But teen movies are often a trap that few people escape unscathed.
In 2007, Bridge to Terabithia arrived and audiences discovered that Robb could carry a heavy emotional drama without sliding into cheap sentimentality. Her chemistry with Josh Hutcherson drove a story about loss and imagination in rural America. She wasn't looking to be the pretty face of the film, but the emotional center of the conflict.
Robb decided her career wasn't going to be a sprint, and in 2011 she moved to Hawaii to shoot Soul Surfer. She had to learn to surf with one arm to play Bethany Hamilton, the athlete who lost a limb in a shark attack. She trained with Hamilton herself for weeks. The actress performed 75% of her own scenes in the water without stunt doubles for the short takes.
And the industry took notice.
In 2013 she took on the challenge of playing a young Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries. Comparisons with Sarah Jessica Parker were inevitable, and the New York press was relentless in the months leading up to the release. But Robb avoided an easy imitation. She preferred to build a character who had not yet grown cynical about the big city.
The series ran for two seasons before it was canceled due to low mass audience ratings.
It was then that the actress decided education was a priority and enrolled at New York University. She studied at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study while turning down scripts that only aimed to exploit her youthful image. In 2014, she focused on her ethics and literature exams.
Her move into adult television happened naturally with The Act in 2019. In this Hulu production, she played Lacey and shared the screen with Patricia Arquette in a plot based on a true story about abuse and murder. Her performance was restrained and controlled. She fully left behind innocent roles to enter the territory of pure psychological suspense.
In 2021, she took part in the miniseries Dr. Death alongside Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin. She played Michelle Shughart, the prosecutor who tried to put a psychopathic surgeon behind bars. To prepare for the role, she spent hours reviewing legal transcripts and recordings of real trials in Texas.
In 2024, she filmed Rebel Ridge for Netflix under the direction of Jeremy Saulnier.
Filming of this latest movie faced several significant delays after the original lead actor left and the production schedule was restructured in Louisiana. The film was shot with high-resolution digital cameras to capture the gritty realism of the plot. The final budget went over $©37 million after the studio's technical adjustments.
