Synopsis of Severance

Mark Scout leads a team at Lumon Industries, a sinister biotechnology corporation. Some of its employees have undergone a procedure called "severance," which divides their memories between work life and personal life. When they enter the office, Mark becomes his "innie" version, who knows nothing about the outside world. When they leave, he becomes his "outie" version, who doesn't remember what happens at work. Created by Dan Erickson and airing on Apple TV, the series stars Adam Scott. The premise explores what happens when a person lives split into two identities that don't know each other, and how far they can devote themselves to their job.

«There's more to work than life.»

Trivia about Severance

Dan Erickson said his job in an office was so numbing that he wished he could skip the eight-hour workday, and that idea became the premise of the show.

Ben Stiller read the pilot script at least five years before the premiere and called it "the longest thing I've ever worked on."

Adam Scott had already worked with Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), where they also played an office worker.

John Turturro recommended Christopher Walken for the role of Burt because he had known them for a long time and didn't have to pretend they were friends.

The title sequences for seasons 1 and 2 won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Design in 2022 and 2025, respectively.

In 2025, Severance became the most-watched series in Apple TV+ history.

The Bell Labs Holmdel complex in New Jersey served as Lumon's headquarters during filming of the first season, with production moving there in April.

Apple bought the rights to the series and oversight of its production from Fifth Season for about $70 million.
