Sandra Bernhard never asked for permission to step into the frame.
In 1982, Martin Scorsese handed her the keys to a car that she personally crashed into the audience in The King of Comedy. Her role as Masha, the unhinged stalker in Jerry Lewis, was a total anomaly for its time. She wasn't looking to be liked or understood. She just wanted people to stare at her while she screamed.
She won the National Society of Film Critics award, and independent cinema discovered a face that didn't fit the molds of traditional casting agencies. Before that breakthrough, she worked as an esthetician in Beverly Hills while looking for her place at The Comedy Store. But the stand-up circuit felt too small for her. Her style was too aggressive for mainstream television standards.
Nobody wrote roles for someone like her.
In 1991, she joined the cast of Roseanne to play Nancy Bartlett. It was a risky move that made her one of the first actresses to bring an openly bisexual character to a top-rated sitcom. The chemistry with Roseanne Barr worked through pure friction. American audiences were seeing, for the first time, a woman who wasn't apologizing for her sexuality or her looks.
Her friendship with Madonna during the filming of Truth or Dare in 1991 fueled tabloid headlines around the world. But Sandra Bernhard always preferred the theater stage to the glitter of the red carpet. In her show Without You I’m Nothing in 1990, she blended the song with biting monologues. The film of the same name grossed just over a million dollars, but it ended up serving as a playbook for a whole generation of alternative women artists.
During the 2000s, her presence faded into brief appearances on shows such as The L Word or Will & Grace. But the industry had filed her away with the figures of the eighties. It was a period of resistance in which she focused her energy on music and cabaret tours through dive bars and jazz clubs.
But in 2018, creator Ryan Murphy brought her back for Pose. She played Nurse Judy, a woman who cared for AIDS patients during the darkest years of the pandemic in New York. In 2022, she reunited with Murphy on American Horror Story: NYC, playing Fran. Her career has been built on being a top-tier supporting actress who steals every scene she's in. Sandra Bernhard has never had an agent who landed her leading roles in major studio productions.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she lent her voice to the animated series Velma, playing the role of Victoria. In 2024, she continues to host her daily radio show Sandyland on SiriusXM, where she interviews pop culture figures without filters. In 2024, Penguin Random House holds the rights to her memoir Confessions of a Pretty Lady, originally published in 1988.
