Dichen Lachman

The casting for the legendary Australian series Neighbours was not looking for a Tibetan actress born in Kathmandu. Lachman auditioned for another role; she didn't fit the original profile, but the producers preferred to rewrite the storyline rather than let her go. So they created Katya Kinski in 2005 exclusively for her.

That stroke of luck in Melbourne marked the start of an unconventional career. Her childhood had been spent between the mountains of Nepal and the beaches of Adelaide.

She dropped out of university to try her luck in acting.

After completing a fourteen-month contract with Australian public television, she packed her bags for Los Angeles. In 2008, Joss Whedon cast her in Dollhouse. Playing Sierra required her to embody dozens of different personalities across two seasons, a technical challenge that caught the attention of the genre industry.

The dystopian-world specialist

Sci-fi casting directors found her features and controlled physical presence to be a highly sought-after asset. For a decade, she racked up appearances in Being Human, The 100 and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Reelers remember her mainly as Reileen Kawahara in Altered Carbon, the 2018 blockbuster produced by Netflix. The shoot required six months of daily training in martial arts and katana handling.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2022, she made her definitive leap into big-budget movies, playing smuggler Soyona Santos in Jurassic World Dominion. Filming at Pinewood Studios meant coordinating complex action scenes during the COVID-19 restrictions.

The Lumon Phenomenon: Precision to the Millimeter

That same year, she premiered on Apple TV+ in the series Severance, directed by Ben Stiller. Her role as Ms. Casey demanded almost surgical precision.

Stiller asked her specifically to reduce her blinking and keep a neutral vocal cadence, bordering on mechanical. The character's ambiguity turned her brief wellness sessions into one of the most talked-about storylines of the plot.

Her film career called her back shortly after. In 2024, she took part in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes under the direction of Wes Ball, shooting on location in New South Wales.

The total budget for that production exceeded $160 million.
