Byron Mann earned a law degree from the University of Southern California because his family in Hong Kong expected a stable future. But the diploma ended up in a drawer once he decided that theater was a far more interesting path than the Los Angeles courtrooms. He started from scratch in an industry that, in the 1990s, mostly offered Asian actors generic villain roles.
In 1994, he landed the role that gave him global visibility in the adaptation of Street Fighter. He played Ryu and shared the bill with Jean-Claude Van Damme in a production that critics tore apart without mercy. The film grossed nearly $100 million at the box office despite harsh reviews from the specialized press.
That shoot in Thailand was an absolute chaos of budgets and egos.
That set the pace for his work over the following decade.
He combined martial arts productions with police thrillers where the budget was usually inversely proportional to the intensity of the choreography. In 1995 he shot Crying Freeman under Christophe Gans. It was one of the few times a manga adaptation captured the look of its source material before CGI took over everything.
Mann soon realized that to survive in Hollywood, he had to be a reliable supporting actor rather than a flash in the pan. In 1999, he appeared in The Corruptor alongside Chow Yun-fat and Mark Wahlberg. It was a stage of his career when casting directors called on him to bring a sense of restraint that contrasted with the over-the-top style typical of action movies of the era.
But the market changed, and Mann knew how to move into television before streaming platforms dominated viewing. In 2007 he starred in Dragon Boys for Canadian television. That role earned him a nomination at the Leo Awards and proved he could carry the dramatic weight of a miniseries without throwing a single kick.
Not everything in his filmography was a success.
In 2004, he joined the cast of Catwoman. The film, starring Halle Berry, won several Razzie Awards and was a major setback for nearly everyone involved in the project. Mann simply moved on to his next shoot without making much media noise.
His most widely recognized work came through modern comic book adaptations. In 2012 he played Yao Fei in the first season of Arrow. His character was key to setting the series' dark tone and served as the lead's mentor in the flashbacks set on Lian Yu.
In 2015, he had a brief but memorable appearance in The Big Short. Adam McKay cast him as Mr. Chau in a scene that explained the complexities of synthetic collateralized debt obligations. The film won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and placed Mann in a dark comedy register he had barely explored until then.
He continued working on major studio productions such as Skyscraper in 2018. There he shared scenes with Dwayne Johnson during a shoot that depended entirely on green screens and digital post-production. That same year he joined the cast of Altered Carbon for Netflix.
In 2019, he took on a dual role in Wu Assassins as Uncle Six. The series blended Chinese mysticism with San Francisco's organized crime scene and let Mann return to the more physical action films that shaped his roots.
In 2023, he premiered The Modelizer under the direction of Keoni Waxman. On this project he not only acted but also served as screenwriter and executive producer to control the story of a romantic comedy set among Hong Kong's elite. The film's budget was handled independently through his own production company based in Asia.
