Carlo Rota didn’t start out chasing applause. He was more interested in getting a steak cooked just right. Born in London in 1961, he grew up in a world where food was the one true religion. His father, renowned chef Dante Rota, taught him that discipline is something you practice every day on the job.
London was just the beginning.
Before stepping onto a stage, he worked in the kitchens of Toronto's most luxurious hotels. But the acting bug was waiting for the right moment to strike. At thirty, he decided he had chopped enough onions and enrolled in dramatic arts training to try his luck in a career far less certain than the restaurant business.
His entry into the Canadian industry was anything but meteoric. He started with small roles in series such as Street Legal and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues. But his Mediterranean look and deep voice opened doors to characters who required a certain moral ambiguity or a somewhat shady charisma.
In 2006, his life changed when he joined the cast of 24. Playing Morris O’Brian let him show a mix of cynicism and vulnerability that was unusual in spy thrillers at the time. Morris wasn’t a field agent; he was the guy who made the technology work while cracking sarcastic jokes to relieve the tension.
And the gamble paid off.
Almost simultaneously, he accepted the role of Yasir Hamoudi in Little Mosque on the Prairie in 2007. That series broke the mold by portraying the life of a Muslim community in a small town in Saskatchewan with pure humor. Rota filmed 91 episodes of this production and made his face familiar in millions of Canadian homes.
Rota has never sought absolute stardom, because he understands that a good actor's power lies in the strength of the ensemble. He has appeared in horror franchises such as Saw V in 2008 and has lent his voice to big-budget video games such as Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013.
His ability to move from political drama to science fiction became evident in The Expanse. In 2017 he played Anderson Dawes, a union leader among the Belters, with an accent and a magnetic presence. He shot seven episodes, enough for fans of the book series to validate his work as one of the most faithful to the source material.
You learn the craft by working on set.
It hasn't all been red carpets and big studio productions. He has taken part in projects that went unnoticed and in series pilots that never aired. Because that is the reality of a character actor: always available for the next casting call, without looking back.
In 2023 he appeared in the thriller The Ritual Killer, sharing the screen with Morgan Freeman. A year later, in 2024, he joined the cast of the film A Sacrifice, directed by Jordan Scott. That same year he shot the historical drama The Last Front, a film set during World War I and shot entirely on location in Belgium.
The shoot for this last production had a budget of eight million euros.
