Gregg Henry has the kind of face viewers recognize long before they remember his name.
In 1976 he made his television debut in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man Book II, and from that point on he specialized in characters who hide something shady behind a middle-class smile. But his work with Brian De Palma is what defined his standing in Hollywood. He made six films with the director, because De Palma found in him the perfect ally for his games of mirrors and voyeurism.
In 1983 he played Charles Goodson in Scarface and just a year later played the twisted Sam Bouchard in Body Double. That role, as a porn actor and a shadowy killer, gave him a visibility that others take decades to earn. And he did it without breaking a sweat.
He's the supporting player who always makes the scene better.
Despite his gift for drama, he never gave up his side as a jazz and blues musician. He plays piano with the same precision he uses to dissect a script before stepping onto set. That duality let him move between genres without audiences tiring of his constant presence on screen.
In 1999 he shared the screen with Mel Gibson in Payback, playing Val Resnick. His performance was so despicable that Hollywood typecast him for a time in tough, corrupt roles. But in 2006 his career took a different turn when James Gunn cast him in Slither.
Gunn made him a regular in his films. In 2014 he appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy as Peter Quill's grandfather and reprised the role in the 2017 sequel. His screen presence closed out one of the most powerful emotional arcs in the Marvel franchise, delivered with crushing technical simplicity.
Not all of it was big-budget cinema.
Television became a fertile refuge for him during the 2010s. He appeared in The Killing as Carl Reddick and in Scandal as Hollis Doyle. Because Henry understands that the medium doesn't matter if the character has edges that scratch beneath the surface of the plot.
In 2011 he released his album You, Right Now to show that his music career was no mere whim of a bored actor. The record features jazz tracks he wrote himself during breaks on set.
Unlike many of his generation, Henry never chased pure stardom. He preferred the security of the hardworking pro who takes on project after project without a break. In 2018 he joined the cast of Black Lightning, and in 2021 he worked on The Rookie, playing Judge Stevens.
And he still brings the same technical rigor he had when he started in the 1970s.
In 2023 he teamed up with James Gunn again in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to close out the Marvel trilogy. Filming of his scenes wrapped in just three working days at the Atlanta studios.
