Calum Worthy learned to manage his image before he was old enough to drive. At just nine years old, he was already hanging around TV sets in his hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, looking for openings in local productions. At 2011, he landed on the set of Austin & Ally to play Dez, a character designed to be the comic relief in a teen series. He was the guy in the outrageous shirts who put up with the lead's pranks while the young audience laughed at his every facial expression.
But Worthy had an ace up his sleeve.
While filming the series for Disney Channel, he used the time to study the business from the inside and started writing scripts. He knew the child actor label expires fast without an exit plan. By 2013, he was already credited as creator and writer on The Coppertop Flop Show, a sketch series that showed his mind worked faster than those of his castmates. In the entertainment industry, brains are often more profitable than raw talent.
His break from his past came in 2017 with American Vandal. In this Netflix mockumentary, he played Peter Maldonado, a high school student obsessed with solving a school vandalism prank. It was an exercise in complete restraint that caught casting directors off guard. Gone were the physical exaggerations of his earlier work, and critics started taking him seriously for the first time.
Then the phone started ringing with offers that demanded darkness.
At 2019, Worthy took on the most suffocating role of his career in the miniseries The Act. To play Nick Godejohn, a troubled young man involved in a real-life murder, he underwent a radical physical transformation. He lost weight, changed the way he spoke and studied the real person's nervous tics for months. Hulu invested a multimillion-dollar budget in a production that depended entirely on the toxic chemistry between him and Joey King.
His ability to inhabit disturbing characters allowed him to avoid the oblivion that tends to swallow actors of his generation.
Worthy has always kept a healthy distance from red carpet fame in order to focus on the longevity of his career. In 2022, he appeared in the comedy Reboot, a project that parodied the return of an old series and the vices of modern Hollywood. He is an actor who understands the industry's mechanics and isn't afraid to take on scenes that challenge his status as a former teen heartthrob.
In 2024, he released the film The Prank alongside veteran Rita Moreno. In this project, he plays a high school teacher who gets caught in a plot of false accusations orchestrated by his students. The independent film was shot in just three weeks with a small crew on locations in California. The movie was filmed with high-end digital cameras to make up for the lack of natural light in the school interiors.
