Michael Shanks wasn't looking for galactic fame when he auditioned in Vancouver. In 1997, the Canadian actor accepted the role of Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1, living in the long shadow of James Spader. But what seemed like a standard TV contract turned into a ten-year stay among hieroglyphs and papier-mâché sets.
Nobody expected a fictional archaeologist to have a fan club.
In the early seasons, the actor fought to keep his character from being a simple comic relief or a helpless scientist. He insisted that Daniel Jackson have his own moral arc, which led to clashes with the writers more than once. In 2002, the accumulated tension led to his departure from the main series over creative differences.
His absence didn't last long, as the pressure from fans proved too much for the producers. He returned in 2003 with an improved contract and a bigger role in the storylines. He went from being the replacement for a movie star to becoming the cornerstone of a franchise that expanded around the world.
Typecasting is the kiss of death for any genre actor. Shanks knew it, so he tried to diversify his résumé with roles on shows such as 24 and Smallville. On the latter, he played Hawkman for 2010 and proved he could wear a superhero suit without losing the restrained intensity that defines his acting.
And then came the operating room.
In 2012, filming began on Saving Hope in Toronto. He played Dr. Charlie Harris, a surgeon who falls into a coma and drifts through the hospital corridors like a ghost. The show ran for five seasons and let him explore a much denser dramatic register, far removed from pure science fiction.
But the actor never fully left the Canadian film sets behind. In 2017, he took part in the Netflix series Altered Carbon, and in 2019 he joined the cast of We Bought a Zoo (Virgin River) to play David. These roles show that he prefers the stability of local productions over the jungle of Los Angeles.
Directing was always his escape plan. In 2001, he stepped behind the camera for the first time to direct the episode Double Jeopardy and realized that technical control appealed to him as much as acting. He repeated the experience in 2014, directing several episodes of his medical drama and overseeing aspects of postproduction.
Shanks keeps a tightly guarded private life in Vancouver with his wife, actress Lexa Doig. They met on the set of Andromeda in 2001, and since then they have shared the screen on various projects without the tabloid press ever getting inside their home.
In 2024, production on the film The Collector confirmed his casting as a homicide detective. Filming took place on locations in British Columbia with an independently financed budget of $5 million.
