Peyton List started working before she learned to read properly. By 2002, she was already posing for commercial catalogs in New York because her parents decided her face was suited for children's advertising. It wasn't a game but a full-time job, and it led to her film debut with an uncredited role in Spider-Man 2 during 2004.
The entertainment industry quickly consumed her. In 2011, she signed with Disney Channel to play Emma Ross on the series Jessie, and that contract dictated her life for nearly a decade. Filming days were marathon sessions. But the audience responded, and the character got her own spin-off, titled Bunk’d, in 2015.
The label of the perfect blonde girl stuck to her like a second skin.
For many child actors, the road ends when puberty changes their image. Peyton List avoided that wall by taking on smaller roles in horror and thriller films. In 2016, she starred in The Thinning for a digital platform. It was her first serious attempt to break away from the polished look and forced smile she had been asked to maintain during her years on teen television.
The real turning point came in 2019. She joined the cast of Cobra Kai during its second season to play Tory Nichols. It wasn't an easy role. Peyton List had to learn karate from scratch so the fight scenes wouldn't look like a coordinated high school dance. And the gamble paid off.
Her character brought a much-needed darkness to the series. Tory Nichols was a working-class girl dealing with serious family problems, a profile that clashed head-on with the rich-girl roles List had built up until then. Because in this production, the choreography was filmed without stunt doubles in close-up shots to add authenticity.
Filming for the later seasons demanded the physical preparation of a professional athlete.
But her success on streaming didn't pull her away from more low-key projects. In 2021, she played a real-life serial killer in American Boogeywoman. Critics were not kind to the movie. So the actress went back to genre television to seek out projects where she would have greater creative control.
In 2023, she starred in School Spirits for Paramount+. She plays a young woman who must solve her own murder while trapped in limbo at her high school. The series earned a renewal for a second season after solid viewership in the North American market.
Peyton List knows the screen is fleeting.
Off the set, she runs her own cosmetics company under the name Pley Beauty. It isn't a typical advertising partnership. She is listed as the founder and makes decisions about the supply chain and product ingredients. The celebrity beauty market is worth billions, and List is aiming for early retirement away from the spotlight.
In 2024, filming wrapped on the movie Girl Haunts Boy, directed by James Steven Sadwith. The production budget was set with private investment that did not exceed ten million dollars. The release was scheduled directly for digital platforms, skipping commercial theaters in Europe.
