Krysten Ritter wasn't looking to become an actress when a talent scout found her at a shopping mall in Pennsylvania. She was fifteen years old and had a height that intimidated the boys at her high school.
She wanted to get out of her family's farm.
Her modeling career took her to cities like Tokyo and New York before she turned eighteen. But modeling bored her to tears. So she started auditioning for TV commercials while living in a tiny apartment in Manhattan.
In 2005, she landed the role of Gia Goodman in Veronica Mars. That was her first real exposure to a devoted fan base. But the real impact came four years later.
The death of her character in Breaking Bad in 2009 changed the industry's view of her dramatic abilities. Nine million viewers watched as her Jane Margolis died while Bryan Cranston watched without doing anything. That sequence, shot in a single take, cemented her future in dark drama.
Many casting directors saw her only as the sarcastic best friend or the depressed goth girl. She decided to break that image through physical comedy.
In 2012, she starred in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. The series was canceled after two seasons. But her performance as Chloe showed she could carry a national production with dry, edgy humor.
And then Marvel came along.
To play Jessica Jones in 2015, she had to train in boxing for months. The Netflix series explored post-traumatic stress and abuse in a way superhero films rarely touched. Ritter shot thirteen episodes per season with fourteen-hour days on the streets of New York.
Ritter didn't settle for waiting for calls from her agent. In 2017, she published her first suspense novel, titled Bonfire.
Writing helped her better understand the structure of the scripts she received. In 2019, she made her directing debut with episode eight of the third season of Jessica Jones. It was a logical move for someone who had spent years analyzing every shot from the production monitor.
Her career has been an exercise in endurance.
In 2023, she joined the world of Orphan Black: Echoes to play Lucy. The production was filmed entirely in Toronto. Her contract stipulated that Ritter would also serve as executive producer through her company Silent Machine.
The series premiered in 2024 with an estimated budget of eight million dollars per episode.
