The terror of improv

Jason Mantzoukas looks like someone who hasn't slept much and knows something you don't. Born in Nahant in 1972, his career didn't start on a conventional film set but in the improv clubs of New York.

He trained at the Upright Citizens Brigade, where he crossed paths with a whole generation of comedians who would later dominate American television for two decades.

Anarchy was his method.

His real breakthrough came in 2010 with the series The League. He played Rafi, a character who was supposed to appear in only one episode as a minor gag.

But his energy was so intense that the writers had to write more scenes for him. Rafi was a funny sociopath, and Mantzoukas played him with a physical intensity that bordered on dangerous for the rest of the cast.

In 2012, he appeared in The Dictator alongside Sacha Baron Cohen. It was his first major role in a big-budget Hollywood production where the script was rewritten on the fly.

Voice, mic and controlled chaos

Mantzoukas is allergic to eggs. It's a real fact that shapes his life, and he sometimes mentions it on his podcast How Did This Get Made? to explain his distrust of film set catering.

This audio show launched in 2010 and specializes in analyzing bad movies. It's one of the most listened-to podcasts in the world and has spawned national theater tours that sell out in minutes.

Audiences want to hear him scream.

His work as a voice actor is immense. In 2017 he voiced Jay Bilzerian for the first time in the animated series Big Mouth on Netflix.

Next came his role in Star Trek: Prodigy in 2021 and in the series Invincible that same year. His voice has a raspy texture that fits perfectly with hyperactive or emotionally unstable characters.

The Precision of the Premium Supporting Actor

In 2019 he appeared in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. It wasn't a comedic role but that of a silent assassin called Tick Tock Man who patrolled the streets of New York.

Mantzoukas knows how to control his volume when the director asks him to. In 2023, he played Dionysus in the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Disney+, bringing a very distinctive tone of divine indifference.

She doesn't seek the spotlight.

He prefers to step into a scene, deliver three lines that steal the viewer's attention, and then disappear. In 2024, he voiced one of the main characters in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.

His voice recording sessions are usually completed in isolated four-hour sessions with no physical contact with other actors. He is paid per recording session according to the rates set by the SAG-AFTRA union.
