Synopsis of The Good Place

Eleanor Shellstrop, a woman from Phoenix, dies and wakes up in the afterlife, where she is greeted by Michael, an immortal architect who has designed the Good Place, a posthumous community meant for those who lived exemplary lives. Eleanor quickly realizes she doesn't belong there. In life she was a selfish, rude saleswoman, so she must hide her past so no one discovers the mix-up. Her assigned soulmate, Chidi, an indecisive professor of moral philosophy, offers to teach her ethics so she can truly earn a place. Living alongside them are Tahani, a wealthy philanthropist, and Jason, a good-natured young man. Eleanor tries to genuinely change while life in the neighborhood grows more complicated.

Trivia about The Good Place

In March 2016, the casting of D'Arcy Carden as Janet Della-Denunzio, a violin saleswoman, was announced, but writer Megan Amram later admitted it was a hoax.

Schur drew inspiration from Lost for the show's setting and premise. When he began developing it, he called Damon Lindelof, co-creator of Lost, to have lunch with him.

According to Schur, the setting was filmed at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California, and already conveyed the feeling of a pastiche of different cultures.

The series has won four Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, and in 2019 it received a Peabody Award for its contributions to entertainment.

In 2019, The Guardian ranked the series No. 69 on its list of the 100 best TV shows of the 21st century.

The photo of Doug Forcett that Michael has on the wall belongs to Noah Garfinkel, a friend of the producers, who was the image used for that portrait.

Michael Schur had known Kristen Bell since 2001 and had her in mind for the role because her public likability allowed the character to be unpleasant without losing the audience's empathy.

To prepare for the series, Schur contacted Pamela Hieronymi, a UCLA professor, and the two spoke for three hours about ethics, motivation and moral intent.
