D'Arcy Carden was born Darcy Erokan in California.
She added the apostrophe to her name as a teenager out of deep admiration for the bassist of the Smashing Pumpkins. That gesture was the first sign of a personality that wanted to stand out in a conventional environment.
Before making a living as an actress, she worked as a nanny for Bill Hader's children in New York. That job lasted years and gave her a close look at the industry while she tried to carve out a place on improv stages.
And the wait was long.
Her real training took place at the Upright Citizens Brigade. At that comedy school, she learned that humor depends not on the funny line but on the reaction to silence. She was part of groups such as Search History and refined a dry style that would later define her career.
During that period, she appeared in viral videos for Funny or Die and had tiny roles in shows like Inside Amy Schumer. She preferred to understand the mechanics of the craft before chasing fame quickly.
In 2014 she landed a recurring role on Broad City. She played Gemma and proved she could steal scenes with just three lines of dialogue. But the real jump in scale didn't come until two years later.
In 2016, Mike Schur cast her to play Janet in The Good Place. The character was a monumental technical challenge. She had to be a database with a human appearance but without real human emotions.
Carden had to shoot scenes where she played five different versions of herself at the same time. The episode titled Janet(s) required a major production effort, with the actress recording every line in front of a green screen so it could later be multiplied in post-production.
The show ended in 2020 after four critically acclaimed seasons. By then, she had balanced her work with the HBO series Barry. In the project of her former boss, Bill Hader, she played Natalie Greer, a neurotic acting student.
It was a natural transition.
In 2022, she led the cast of A League of Their Own as Greta Gill. She didn't just act; she got involved in the storytelling of a series that explored sexuality in professional sports in the 1940s. Amazon permanently canceled the series in 2023 after a writers' strike stalled negotiations for a final season.
That same year, she made her Broadway debut in the play The Thanksgiving Play. Larissa FastHorse's script let her face a live audience in a satire about privilege and political correctness. It was her first major stage role on the New York commercial circuit.
In 2023, she appeared in the film Dicks: The Musical under the direction of Larry Charles. The production had an estimated budget of seven million dollars and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. In 2019, she earned her only Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on television.
