Trivia about Barry

The lead character's original last name was supposed to be Belkin, according to early drafts of the pilot script.

NoHo Hank's character was supposed to be killed by Barry in the pilot, but the creators made him a recurring character after seeing Carrigan.

Barry's anxiety, in a profession he has a natural talent for, was inspired by Hader's time as a member of Saturday Night Live.

Hader met Jessie Giacomazzi through stunt coordinator Wade Allen, and later wrote the character of Lily with her in mind.

Filming for season three was halted on March 18, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before any episodes had been shot.

The first three episodes were screened at the Series Mania festival in Lille, France, on April 28, 2018.

Henry Winkler said that Gene Cousineau was initially a darker, colder character, but the creators rewrote his tone to incorporate the warmth the actor brought during development.

During season four, Bill Hader and Alec Berg kept part of the plot from the cast until filming; Winkler even found out on the fly that some scenes were set in Peru.
